Resort-Style Outdoor Retreat

The owners of this Melbourne property in the leafy suburb of Balwyn didn’t hesitate to contact Ashtown Landscapes to design their dream backyard and pool after seeing an Ashtowndesigned garden while attending a dinner party.

Impressed by the quality of the garden’s design and the attention to detail, the enamoured dinner party guests found it an easy decision to call Shawn Townsend, director of Ashtown Landscapes, and ask what he could create for them. While the homeowners had some idea of what they wanted, they needed help to create a cohesive design in which landscape and pool would be seamlessly integrated. What they gave Shawn was a blank canvas; what he gave them was a design that turned their dream into a reality.

“I designed the pool to be the centrepiece of the rear garden, positioning it so that it could be easily viewed from all angles,” explains Shawn. “The pool is flanked by flame-finished Tasman grey granite and the pool surrounds are set on three levels, creating different rooms for entertaining.” Nestled into the corner, a day bed sits atop a platform tiled in 1000mm x 1000mm Arctic White granite. This platform seems to float over the pool and provides the perfect spot for relaxing poolside. Granite was chosen for this project because of its robust performance and good looks. Shawn sourced the stone from Granite Works, located in the Melbourne suburb of Hawthorn.

“I rely on Granite Works for all my granite supplies because of the superior quality of the stone and the unparalleled customer service provided by the company,” says Shawn. The pool boasts a sheer-decent waterfall, adding sound and movement, while a rendered planted box (painted in Dulux colour, Antique White USA) effortlessly emerges from the water, enhancing the resort-style feel of the poolscape. Planted with Magnolia ‘Little Gem’, the planter complements the surrounding garden beds which feature cycads, Syzygium ‘Hinterland Gold’ and Liriope ‘Evergreen Giant’ — all hardy plants requiring scant attention. Night-time entertaining was a must so lowvoltage Megabay uplights and brushed-chrome Hunza wall lights were installed throughout the landscape. To transform the pool at night, there are multi-coloured underwater LED lights. “To create some warmth to the day bed area we installed a Cypress pine timber pergola coupled with Hunza stainless-steel pillar lights,” Shawn adds. “And to complement the pergola, screens of 42mm hardwood slat were installed around the perimeter.”

To complete the project, a fully frameless 12mm channel-set glass fence was installed by the Ashtown team. The fence was installed using a unique channel system so the glass comes straight out of the ground, ensuring a clear view. Shawn Townsend has delivered yet another successful landscape, due, in no small part, to the skill of the Ashtown construction team, headed by foreman Cale Porter. “Best of all,” says Shawn, “the owners could not be happier.”
