Most Germans do not want Turkey in the EU. Merkel like to open a chapter of negotiations with Ankara

Almost two thirds of Germans oppose Turkey's accession to the European Union, according to a survey published Sunday in the German newspaper Bild am Sonntag, the same day that Chancellor Angela Merkel begins two-day visit to Ankara.According to the survey conducted by Emnid Institute, 60% of respondents said they oppose Turkey's entry into the European Union, 30% are for, and the remaining 10% were not pronounced.In fact, 57% of participants considered that the development and growth of the Turkish military are issues of concern, while 35% were happy for Ankara's growing influence.

Angela Merkel will start Sunday on an official visit to Turkey, which will include a trip to the border with Syria, where the Bundeswehr participate in a NATO mission to protect Turkey in the event of missile attacks from Syria. Monday, German chancellor will meet with President Abdullah Gül and Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan.Before his departure, Merkel said in favor of opening a new chapter in the accession negotiations with Turkey in its EU.

'' We negotiated without the result being fixed beforehand. These negotiations have stalled lately and I am in favor of opening a new chapter to advance less'' said Chancellor.Merkel begins today a two-day visit to Turkey with an agenda that includes intricate negotiations on accession to the European Union and cooperation in the fight against terrorism, file Syria Iranian nuclear program, the situation in Mali, the Middle East peace process and flexible visa regime.

Merkel will meet Monday in Ankara with President Abdullah Gül and Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan.Today, Merkel will visit German soldiers Kahramannmaras Province, where the Bundeswehr participate in a NATO mission to protect Turkey in the event of missile attacks from Syria. Angela Merkel will be accompanied by a delegation of Turkish representatives of the financial, energy, mechanical engineering and aviation.
